The only day of the year pedestrians can walk across the five-mile Mackinac Bridge.
What to Expect
- 1.You'll be walking five miles across the Mackinac Bridge from Mackinaw City to the other side, so bring a camera for the views of the straits and keep a comfortable, steady pace.
- 2.The bridge is exposed to wind and weather, so dress in layers and wear sturdy shoes; mornings in early September can be chilly even if the day ends up warm.
- 3.Plan logistics ahead of time since the start is at 7:00 and you'll finish around 11:30; arrive early to park and queue up before the crowd builds and be prepared for possible traffic detours.
- 4.Food options on the route are limited, so pack water and a snack. Plan to eat after you cross or at designated endpoints.
- 5.If you're going solo this is a very social event but you can still go at your own pace. Chat with fellow walkers if you want to connect.
